Practice Problems 8

Lecture 8: Limits and the Derivative

Problem numbers refer to the textbook (Chiang & Wainwright, 4th edition). These are not graded, but you should attempt them all before the quiz. Try each question yourself first, then expand the Solution to check.

Exercise 6.2

2. Given the function y=5x2−4x:

  1. Find the difference quotient as a function of x and Δx.
Solution

ΔyΔx=f(x+Δx)−f(x)Δx=5(x+Δx)2−4(x+Δx)−(5x2−4x)Δx=5(x2+2xΔx+(Δx)2)−4x−4Δx−5x2+4xΔx=10xΔx+5(Δx)2−4ΔxΔx=10x−4+5Δx

  1. Find the derivative dy/dx, using the limit definition.
Solution

dydx=limΔx→0ΔyΔx=limΔx→0(10x−4+5Δx)=10x−4

  1. Find f′(2) and f′(3).
Solution

f′(2)=10×2−4=16f′(3)=10×3−4=26

3. Given the function y=5x−2:

  1. Find the difference quotient Δy/Δx. What type of function is it?
Solution

ΔyΔx=5(x+Δx)−2−(5x−2)Δx=5ΔxΔx=5

It is a constant function.

  1. Since Δx does not appear in Δy/Δx in part (a), does it make any difference to the value of Δy/Δx whether Δx is large or small? Consequently, what is the limit of the difference quotient as Δx approaches zero?
Solution

No: the difference quotient equals 5 whatever the size of Δx. So its limit as Δx→0 is also 5, i.e. dy/dx=5.
