Practice Problems 13

Lecture 13: Integration

Problem numbers refer to the textbook (Chiang & Wainwright, 4th edition). These are not graded, but you should attempt them all before the quiz. Try each question yourself first, then expand the Solution to check.

Exercise 14.2

1. Find the following:

  1. ∫16x−3dx(x≠0)
Solution

∫16x−3dx=16⋅x−2−2+c=−8x−2+c

  1. ∫(x5−3x)dx
Solution

∫(x5−3x)dx=∫x5dx−3∫xdx=x66−3x22+c

  1. ∫2e−2xdx
Solution

∫2e−2xdx=2∫e−2xdx=2⋅e−2x−2+c=−e−2x+c

Exercise 14.3

1. Evaluate the following:

  1. ∫1312x2dx
Solution

∫1312x2dx=[x36]13=27−16=133

  1. ∫−11(ax2+bx+c)dx
Solution

∫−11(ax2+bx+c)dx=[ax33+bx22+cx]−11=(a3+b2+c)−(−a3+b2−c)=2a3+2c

2. Evaluate the following:

  1. ∫12e−2xdx
Solution

∫12e−2xdx=[e−2x−2]12=−12(e−4−e−2)=12(e−2−e−4)

  1. ∫e6(1x+11+x)dx
Solution

∫e6(1x+11+x)dx=[ln⁡x+ln⁡(1+x)]e6=ln⁡6+ln⁡7−ln⁡e−ln⁡(1+e)=ln⁡42−1−ln⁡(1+e)

5. Verify that a constant c can be equivalently expressed as a definite integral:

  1. c=∫0bcbdx
Solution

∫0bcbdx=[cxb]0b=cbb−0=c

  1. c=∫0c1dt
Solution

∫0c1dt=[t]0c=c−0=c
