Practice Problems 12

Lecture 12: Implicit Functions

Problem numbers refer to the textbook (Chiang & Wainwright, 4th edition). These are not graded, but you should attempt them all before the quiz. Try each question yourself first, then expand the Solution to check.

Exercise 8.5

1. For each F(x,y)=0, find dy/dx:

  1. y−6x+7=0
Solution

With Fx=−6 and Fy=1, the implicit-function rule gives

dydx=−FxFy=−−61=6

Equivalently, solving for y=6x−7 and differentiating gives dy/dx=6.

  1. 3y+12x+17=0
Solution

With Fx=12 and Fy=3,

dydx=−FxFy=−123=−4

  1. x2+6x−13−y=0
Solution

With Fx=2x+6 and Fy=−1,

dydx=−FxFy=−2x+6−1=2x+6

2. For each F(x,y)=0 use the implicit-function rule to find dy/dx:

  1. F(x,y)=6x3−3y=0
Solution

Fx=18x2Fy=−3

dydx=−FxFy=−18x2−3=6x2

3. For each F(x,y,z)=0 use the implicit-function rule to find ∂y/∂x and ∂y/∂z:

  1. F(x,y,z)=x2y3+z2+xyz=0
Solution

Fx=2xy3+yzFy=3x2y2+xzFz=2z+xy

∂y∂x=−FxFy=−2xy3+yz3x2y2+xz

∂y∂z=−FzFy=−2z+xy3x2y2+xz
