Practice Problems 10

Lecture 10: Exponential and Log Functions

Problem numbers refer to the textbook (Chiang & Wainwright, 4th edition). These are not graded, but you should attempt them all before the quiz. Try each question yourself first, then expand the Solution to check.

  1. y=ln⁡(2x1+x)
Solution

dydx=ddx[ln⁡2x−ln⁡(1+x)]=22x−11+x=1x(1+x)

  1. y=5x4ln⁡x2
Solution

dydx=5x4⋅2xx2+20x3ln⁡x2=10x3(1+2ln⁡x2)=10x3(1+4ln⁡x)

7. Find the derivatives of the following by first taking the natural log of both sides:

  1. y=3x(x+2)(x+4)
Solution

Since ln⁡y=ln⁡3x−ln⁡(x+2)−ln⁡(x+4),

1ydydx=1x−1x+2−1x+4=8−x2x(x+2)(x+4)

Hence,

dydx=8−x2x(x+2)(x+4)⋅3x(x+2)(x+4)=3(8−x2)(x+2)2(x+4)2

  1. y=(x2+3)ex2+1
Solution

Since ln⁡y=ln⁡(x2+3)+x2+1,

1ydydx=2xx2+3+2x=2x(x2+4)x2+3

Hence,

dydx=2x(x2+4)x2+3⋅(x2+3)ex2+1=2x(x2+4)ex2+1
